Protein Description

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is one of the main causes of neurological disability in the elderly. Levodopa is the gold standard for treating this disease, but chronic levodopa therapy is complicated by motor fluctuation and dyskinesia. Recently, a new class of enzyme inhibitors, called COMT inhibitors, has been developed. Like carbidopa, COMT inhibitors prevent the breakdown of levodopa. Their main effect is to prolong the duration of action of a dose of levodopa.
